Chapter Seventeen

Julia and Vivian left Evy in the back office with Geoff and a promise to return with champagne and at least three shrimp cocktails. Geoffrey the ghost followed them into the packed room.

“Quick, before we get back,” Julia said. “What were you getting off Richard?”

“I definitely think he’s hiding something. Also, he’s attracted to me, which is weird.”

Julia looked at her. “Why is that weird? You’re a very beautiful woman.”

“It’s more the fact that we suspect he killed someone,” Vivian said. “Normally he’s so my type. I love breaking uptight bankers out of their shells as long as they don’t have a weird Asian-girl fetish.”

“Weird Asian… Oh.” Julia wrinkled her nose. “Yeah, I know that guy.”

“It’s always a risk.” She plastered on a smile as they approached Michael and Richard, who were still chatting. “Gentlemen, so nice to see you again.”

Michael had a look on his face that Julia couldn’t read but she definitely wanted to ask about. That was until he turned to her. Then his face read all the things she found attractive.

Delight.

Humor.

Warmth.

Warning sirens were sounding. She could fall for him, and then she’d be stuck. She’d have to try a relationship again and not just casual dating to satisfy Sergio’s relentless meddling.

Geoffrey was no help at all. “That man likes you very much, Miss Brooks.”

“Quiet, Geoffrey,” she muttered. “Michael! You’re still looking at the bronzes.”

His smile got wider. “We were waiting for you and Vivian. Your champagne got warm, so I tossed it and grabbed you another one.”

“Thanks.” Dammit, he was thoughtful too. “That’s probably not ecologically responsible, but I can’t bring myself to care.”

“Life is too short to drink room-temperature champagne.”

She took the glass of bubbling wine. “That sounds like a line from a movie.”

Michael narrowed his eyes. “I think it might be. Probably a bad sign when I start quoting my own films, right?”

“I think it depends on the film.”

“Good point.”

He was everything Julia usually avoided, especially since her cardiac event. He had “serious relationship” written all over his handsome face. Plus he was her age, which only made him more dangerous. Men her age—who weren’t in the midst of a midlife crisis—were focused and relentless when they saw something they wanted. Julia had dropped one relationship entirely when the man asked her on the fourth date if she was ready to get serious.

She didn’t need that kind of pressure in her life.

Julia nodded at Richard and Vivian, who were engaged in an animated conversation in front of one of the bronze sculptures. Geoffrey, true to his assignment, was hovering nearby.

Julia leaned closer to Michael. “I think Vivian and Richard hit it off.”

“He’s attracted to smart women, so I’m not surprised.” That inscrutable look she’d seen earlier crossed his face again. “Maybe warn her… I don’t know where she is in life, but he has some unsettled business before he’s free.”

A dozen questions burned the tip of her tongue, but she tried to keep her expression relaxed. “The divorce, right?” She grimaced. “Those can take forever.
